   Fri 8. & Sat 9. September 2017 - A 2-Day Practical Course

Across the North American Equine Industry, the pre-purchase examination of horses is handled very differently and is associated with many challenging and contentious issues.  It is a common cause of significant problems for equine practitioners and this deters a good number of vets from getting involved.

This course is aimed at practitioners with variable levels of pre-purchase exam experience by covering the general principles of the systematic and thorough pre-purchase exam and the significant discipline-specific differences that apply.  The many interactive panel sessions will furthermore focus on contentious and challenging questions and clinical scenarios which will be openly and honestly discussed with the attendees.

This course will cover the following discussion points through short presentations and interactive panel discussions during which the experts will share useful tips and tricks and pearls of wisdom:

  • Role of the Vet in the Pre-Purchase Exam (PPE)
  • The Static Examination of the Pre-Purchase Exam
  • The Dynamic Examination
  • PPE Imaging – The Role of X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI & Endoscopy
  • Reporting on PPE & Pitfalls, Conflicts of Interest, Legal Issues...
  • Laboratory Testing for PPE
  • Sports Horse PPE in North America vs. Europe (incl. cases)
  • Public Auctions & PPE of the Thoroughbred Racehorse (incl. cases)
  • PPE of the Western Performance Horse (incl. cases)
  • PPE Imaging Case Discussions – X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI & Endoscopy

The 7 ½ hours of practical sessions will provide the attendees with plenty of opportunities to develop their practical pre-purchase skills on live horses and in small groups (2-4 vets per horse) and under the supervision of the internationally renowned experts at the following stations:

  • Static Examination – Basic Health
  • Static examination – Musculoskeletal System
  • Dynamic Examination
  • PPE of live Sports Horses
  • PPE of live Thoroughbreds
  • PPE of live Western Performance Horses

The course fee includes lunch at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, wine & cheese reception, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.
