This practical course provides equine practitioners with a good overview on all medical, orthopedic, dental and surgical aspects specific to donkeys and mules allowing participants to not only expand their knowledge but especially their hands-on skillset.

Day 1 starts at 15:00h with 3 hours of interactive Case-Discussions, Q&A which will give attendees the unique opportunity to apply what they have learned during Lecture Series in discussion with the world-renowned specialists. This will then be followed by the obligatory Wine & Cheese Reception allowing for attendees to socialise with colleagues and the speakers/instructors.
On the second day, 7 hours of practical sessions on live donkeys and cadaver specimens and case-based discussions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine). Each attendee will rotate through the following practical sessions under the watchful eye of the internationally renowned specialists:

The course fee includes, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, lunch and a certificate of attendance. To participate in the On-Location Case-Discussions & Practical Sessions, attendees are required to have first worked through the Lecture Series (included in the price). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

After qualifying from the university of Glasgow in 1998, Patrick worked in mixed general practice in North East Scotland before moving to Ireland to undertake an internship and then residency in Large Animal Surgery at University College Dublin (UCD). After his residency he worked as College Lecturer in Equine Surgery at UCD for several years before moving to Denmark to the University of Copenhagen. Patrick has since worked in private and academic practice and after 11 years at the Weipers Centre Equine Hospital in Glasgow, he has recently taken up the position of Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh.
Patrick is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and a European and RCVS recognized specialist in equine surgery.
He is involved with a number of projects around the world with working equidae, including training vets and equid owners in resource limited settings. His clinical and research interests include equine poor performance, the upper airway, ophthalmic surgery, trauma and wound healing and Ihe has been instrumental in the development and validation of the technique of overground endoscopy. Although Patrick is principally a surgeon, he has a range of experience with exotic, zoo animals and wildlife, and served as a trustee and veterinary director of the Irish Seal for many years. In addition to this Patrick is a keen Bee Keeper and introduced the teaching of Bee husbandry and disease to the undergraduate veterinary curriculum.

Alex graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge in 2009. An equine internship at Liverpool University in 2009 was interspersed by a spell in equine practice, and then a Medicine Fellowship at Hagyards in Kentucky in 2011. After returning to equine practice for a further year, Alex joined the Weipers Centre Equine Hospital, Glasgow University to complete an equine internal medicine residency and Masters degree. Now a Diplomat of the European College of Internal Medicine (2016) she is currently an equine medicine clinician at the Weipers Centre, Glasgow. Alex is particularly interested in infectious diseases with a focus on working equids and she has worked in North and West Africa building clinical and research expertise.

David qualified from Cambridge Vet School in 1995. He worked in general practice in Yorkshire for 2 years prior to undertaking a 2-year residency and then a PhD at the University of Glasgow. Following this he moved to South Africa as senior medicine clinician in the equine hospital of the University of Pretoria. David subsequently returned to Scotland and worked for Clyde Veterinary Group as head of their equine medicine service. He is currently Professor in equine medicine at the University of Glasgow.
