COURSE DESCRIPTION
Oral extraction techniques have been shown to cause much fewer post-interventional complications in horses compared to surgical extraction techniques. Performing oral dental extractions should however not be taken lightly as complications like dental fractures, retained root tips, collateral damage etc. can easily occur and require in-depth anatomical knowledge, good technical skills and clinical versatility to resolve. This highly practical boutique course (max. 24 attendees) is aimed at practitioners with a good working knowledge in equine dentistry who want to learn about various oral dental extraction techniques, how to apply them clinically and managing arising complications.

Day 1 starts at 15:00h with 3 hours of interactive Case-Discussions, Q&A which will give attendees the unique opportunity to apply what they have learned during Lecture Series in discussion with the world-renowned specialists. This will then be followed by the obligatory Wine & Cheese Reception allowing for attendees to socialise with colleagues and the speakers/instructors.
On the second day, 7 hours of practical sessions will provide an intimate environment for attendees to develop their practical skills on equine specimens in true small groups (2-3 vets per specimen; attendee-to-instructor ratio of 5-8/1) at the following stations:
- Oral Endoscopy & Examination
- Diagnostic Imaging – Radiographic Techniques etc.
- Local Anesthetic Techniques (incl. TMJ)
- Advanced Incisor & Canine Extractions
- Oral Extraction Techniques for Cheek Teeth I
- Oral Extraction Techniques for Cheek Teeth II
The course fee includes, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, lunch and a certificate of attendance. To participate in the On-Location Case-Discussions & Practical Sessions, attendees are required to have first worked through the Lecture Series (included in the price). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

More InfoRob qualified from the University of Bristol in 1999 and started in mixed practice in North Devon immediately afterwards. During the next two years he became very interested in equine dentistry and moved back to the University of Bristol to join their equine practice to further hone his skills. There he worked with recognised experts in equine dental disease. He also attended courses run by the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) and has since become a tutor on all the BEVA dentistry courses. Rob has also travelled widely to lecture on equine dentistry, with regular visits to the USA. In October 2003, he sat the British Equine Veterinary and British Veterinary Dental Associations’ exam in equine dentistry and became only the second veterinary surgeon in the UK to successfully pass and achieve BEVA/BVDA approved status. In 2004, he became an examiner for the BEVA/BVDA equine dentistry exam and was appointed as the chairman of the examination committee from 2005 to 2008. Rob joined Bell Equine Clinic in 2006, bringing both first opinion and referral dentistry services to the practice. He now runs Equine Dentistry Referrals Ltd in the UK.

Hubert graduated from the University of Vienna in Veterinary Medicine in 1992. Following a two year period in a private equine clinic near Vienna, he completed his doctoral thesis in 1996 and returned to the University as an assistant at the Clinic for Surgery where he specialised in Equine Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2013 Hubert became a specialist of the newly formed equine branches of the American and European Dental Colleges. Since 2015 Hubert is associate professor for Equine Surgery in Vienna. In 2020, Hubert set up his own clinic Tierklinik Gaaden.
Hubert has published several studies and clinical articles in peer-reviewed veterinary journals and lectures regularly at national and international courses and conferences on equine dentistry.

More InfoDr. Scott Marx, originally from Wisconsin, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1981, with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. He then served as an Army of?cer and paratrooper in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. During this time he became a sky diving jumpmaster and instructor, earned a black belt in Kung Fu, and raced motorcycles. Dr. Marx left the Army and attended the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1995.
Dr Marx became a partner in a mixed animal practice in Bailey, CO, mainly focusing on large animals where he developed an interest in equine dentistry. He started Advance Equine Dentistry in March 2000, and has practiced equine dentistry almost exclusively for the last 16 years. Dr. Marx also volunteers dental services to the Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation which typically entails extractions and root canal therapy on lions, tigers, bears, etc.
Dr. Marx conducts equine dentistry seminars and lectures for veterinarians and veterinary students in the U.S., Caribbean, Canada, and Australia (he is also licensed there). Dr. Marx is a consultant for a large veterinary dental instrument company, served on the American Association of Equine Practitioners Dentistry Committee, and the Equine Dentistry Regulations Committee for the Colorado Board of Veterinary Medicine. He is also a member of the American Veterinary Dental Society, American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Marx lives in Parker with his wife Annie and an assortment of Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.

More InfoAfter his veterinary studies in Germany, France and Australia, Knut qualified as a veterinary surgeon at the Free University of Berlin in 2004.
He subsequently completed an internship in equine medicine and surgery at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Liège, Belgium, after which he returned to Germany working in several private equine hospitals. He then freelanced with emphasis in equine dentistry. Knut completed a surgical residency at Lyon Veterinary Teaching Hospital, France, in 2015 and continues to be a consultant veterinary surgeon for dentistry and dental and sinus surgery at Lyon. He has recently been a locum equine surgeon in the UK and the Emirates. Knut has published articles in peer-reviewed veterinary journals and he lectures courses and conferences on equine dentistry in France and internationally.
His major interests in equine dentistry are preservative and minimal-invasive techniques, including endodontics and key-hole surgery. In addition to equine dentistry, Knut also enjoys equine orthopedics and rehabilitation and all kinds of equine surgery.
