COURSE DESCRIPTION
Equine practitioners are regularly exposed to various and sometimes contradicting opinions on farriery and especially on therapeutic shoeing. The fact that new graduates go into practice with minimal training in farriery and shoeing only exacerbates the problem and leaves practitioners grappling with this contentious subject.
This practical course approaches the subject in a scientific and as objective way as possible by reporting established and recent, cutting-edge facts from scientifically sound clinical studies and aims to equip equine practitioners to have meaningful and informed discussions with their farriers.

Day 1 starts at 15:00h with 3 hours of interactive Case-Discussions, Q&A which will give attendees the unique opportunity to apply what they have learned during Lecture Series in discussion with the world-renowned specialists. This will then be followed by the obligatory Wine & Cheese Reception allowing for attendees to socialise with colleagues and the speakers/instructors.
On the second day, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and limb specimens in small groups (2 vets per specimen) and to discuss all aspects of foot trimming, shoeing and farriery with the specialists. Each attendee will be rotating through the following practical stations:

- Application of a Foot Cast
The course fee includes coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, lunch and a certificate of attendance. To participate in the On-Location Case-Discussions & Practical Sessions, attendees are required to have first worked through the Lecture Series (included in the price). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

Dr. Parks is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and received his certificate in Veterinary Radiology from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1982. He currently serves as Professor of large animal surgery at the University of Georgia. Dr. Parks has made over 160 professional presentations and has peer reviewed and authored articles and book chapters. His clinical interests are large animal surgery lameness and diseases of the foot.

More InfoDr. Steve O'Grady was a professional farrier for ten years prior to obtaining his degree in veterinary medicine. He learned the farrier trade through a formal apprenticeship under "Hall of Fame" farrier, Joseph M. Pierce, of West Chester, Pennsylvania. He then returned to school, attended Haverford College and went on to graduate from the University of Pretoria, Faculty of Veterinary Science in South Africa with a DVM Degree in 1981. After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. O'Grady did an equine internship in Cape Town, South Africa. From here he went on to join Dr. Dan Flynn at the prestigious Georgetown Equine Hospital in Charlottesville, VA where he stayed for 10 years before opening his own practice devoted to competition horses and farriery.
In 2003, Dr. O'Grady opened Northern Virginia Equine in Marshall, Virginia which is a referral practice devoted to foot disease and equine therapeutic farriery. Here he combines his skills as a veterinarian and a farrier to better understand and treat problems of the foot. Dr. O'Grady has published 25 peer-reviewed papers in the veterinary literature, numerous papers in the farrier literature, written ten book chapters and edited two editions of Veterinary Clinics of North America on equine podiatry and therapeutic farriery - all resulting from his extensive work in equine podiatry. In 2003, he was inducted into the International Equine Veterinarians Hall of Fame and in 2009; he received the AAEP President's Award for his work in farrier education.

More InfoMichael Schramme qualified as a veterinarian from the University of Gent, Belgium, in 1985. He has since worked as a resident, lecturer, senior lecturer or associate professor in equine surgery at the University of Ghent, the Royal Veterinary College (London), the Animal Health Trust (Newmarket), Cornell University (New York) and North Carolina State University (USA). In 2011, Dr. Schramme was appointed Professor in Equine Surgery and Orthopaedics at the Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Lyon, VetAgro Sup in France. He holds the Certificate in Equine Orthopaedics, the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons, the Diploma of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and Associate Diplomate status of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. He has a PhD in equine rheumatology. Dr. Schramme is President of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and ex-President of the European Society of Veterinary Orthopaedics and Traumatology. He has an interest in all aspects of large animal surgery, lameness and diagnostic imaging with special emphasis on MRI and regenerative medicine.

His fields of major interest are foal development, diagnosis and treatment of lameness particularly as related to the foot and preventive and therapeutic shoeing technique. Evidence-Based Farriery for Equine Practitioners course 2016
I really wanted to thank you once more for the excellent VetPD course in Oslo, which I had the opportunity to attend. After 26 years being a vet I finally have a clear concept for what is going on in a foot of a horse. By this you gave me the possibility to approach a problem in the foot systematically and with a certain logic.
