COURSE DESCRIPTION
This 2-day practical course was designed for equine practitioners with a good working knowledge in internal medicine and covers challenging conditions and new developments in the field. Each of the following hot topics will be addressed via well-illustrated, interactive case-discussions providing a platform for the panel of speakers to share pitfalls, erroneous clinical conclusions and useful tips and tricks:
- Pleural & Pericardial Diseases
- Hepatic Diseases
- Non-healing Corneal Ulcers
- Ultrasonography of the Foal
- Common Cardiac Conditions
- Investigation of the Thin Horse
- Urinary Tract Disorders
- Vascular Ultrasound – New Developments and Tips & Tricks
Between both afternoons, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and cadaver specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine), all under the supervision of specialists. Each attendee will rotate through the following practical sessions:
- Abdominal Ultrasound & Liver/Renal Biopsy Techniques
- Endocrine Case-Based Discussions
- Ultrasound-guided Spinal Fluid Collection
- Arrhythmia Case-based Discussions
- Thoracic Ultrasound incl. Basic Echocardiography
- Respiratory Endoscopy incl. BAL, Tracheal & Guttural Pouch Washes, PET Block etc.
- Ophthalmologic Procedures & Ultrasound – Nerve blocks, lavage system placement, keratotomy, aqueocentesis etc.
The course fee includes lunches at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration via the VetPD website www.vetpd.com is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

More InfoGunther van Loon graduated from Ghent University, Belgium, in 1992 and has worked at the Ghent University, Department of Large Animal Internal Medicine, ever since. In 2001 he finished his PhD on “Atrial pacing and experimental atrial fibrillation in equines”. In 2004 he became Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine and in 2011 Associate Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. He is now Professor in Large Animal Internal Medicine at Ghent University and his major interests are cardiology (arrhythmias, electrophysiology, cardiac pacing, echocardiography, TDI, 2D ST), and thoracic and abdominal ultrasound. Areas of research include 2D Speckle Tracking, Tissue Doppler Imaging, cardiac biomarkers, assessment of arterial wall stiffness and great vessel pathology, atrial fibrillation. Gunther has published mainly in the field of equine internal medicine and cardiology and lectures regularly at national and international courses and conferences.

More InfoVictoria graduated from the Cambridge University in 2006 and then spent three years working as an equine ambulatory vet in a large practice in the Cotswolds. She joined the medicine referral service at Liphook Equine Hospital in March 2009 as a European College of Equine Internal Medicine resident. Victoria obtained her RCVS Equine Internal Medicine certificate in June 2011. She became a European Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine in February 2013 and is now part of the medicine referral team at Liphook Equine Hospital. Victoria's research interests include Cushing’s disease, equine metabolic syndrome and liver disease and she is an official veterinary surgeon for the Cria Caballar de Espana (Spanish Stud Book).

Coming from the center of Berlin: Drive west on the B2/B5 Heerstrasse. Turn left into Wilhelmstrasse (signs for Kladow/B7/Potsdam). After 1.6 km turn right towards Seeburg. After 0.7 km you have reached the horse clinic (on the right-hand side).

Coming from Nauen: You are driving on the B5 in the direction of Berlin. Take the Seeburg/Potsdam/Falkensee exit. At the traffic lights, turn left onto the L20. In Seeburg, turn left at the traffic lights into Dorfstrasse and continue on Engelsfelder Chaussee to Engelsfelde. The clinic is on the left.
