Across Europe, the pre-purchase examination of horses is handled very differently and is associated with many challenging and contentious issues.  It is a common cause of significant problems for equine practitioners and this deters a good number of vets from getting involved.

This course is aimed at practitioners who are interested in learning the general principles of the systematic and thorough pre-purchase exam and in discussing national differences relevant to practitioners vetting horses for foreign buyers.  Experienced vets will also have plenty to keep them entertained as frequently and occasionally arising questions and challenges and various clinical scenarios will be extensively discussed in an open and honest way.

This course will cover the following discussion points in English and with Hungarian translation from an international perspective:

  • The Static Examination of the Pre-Purchase Exam (PPE)
  • The Dynamic Examination
  • How to conclude on examinations – Declaration & Interpretation
  • Avoiding PPE problems before they happen
  • Understanding PPE across Europe
  • Vetting different types of horses
  • Reflections on Identification, Vaccination, Biosecurity, Pony Measurements etc.
  • Medication Control & Doping
  • The role of Radiology in PPE
  • How to assess the Horse Neurologically as part of the PPE

The 7 hours of practical sessions will provide the attendees with plenty of opportunities to develop their practical skills on live horses and in small groups (2-4 vets per horse) and under the supervision of the internationally renowned specialists at the following stations:

  • Static Examination – Basic Health
  • Static examination – Musculoskeletal System
  • Dynamic Examination
  • Performing PPE on live Horses I - III
  • Challenging X-rays – Interactive PowerPoint Panel Case-Discussions

The course fee includes lunch at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. On the evening of the first day all attendees are invited to attend the wine & cheese reception. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

This course is suitable for RCVS Modules:  B-EP.3;  C-E.4;  C-E.6;  C-E.7;  C-E.15;  C-E.17
