COURSE DESCRIPTION
Equine practitioners working with sports horses are under considerable pressure to keep the horses under their care competing at the highest level at all times. Furthermore, evaluating poorly performing competition horses can be a daunting task because the clinical signs caused by different conditions may be very similar, leaving vets wondering where to start their investigation.
To participate in the On-Location Portion, attendees are required to have first worked through the corresponding online Lecture Series ‘Sports Horse Medicine & Orthopaedics':

The speakers / instructors on this course are leaders in the field of equine rehabilitation worldwide and will be discussing the following topics interactively with the attendees:

Day 1 starts at 15:00h with 3 hours of interactive Case-Discussions, Q&A which will give attendees the unique opportunity to apply what they have learned during Lecture Series in discussion with the world-renowned specialists. This will then be followed by the obligatory Wine & Cheese Reception allowing for attendees to socialise with colleagues and the speakers/instructors.
On the second day , 7 hours of practical sessions will allow attendees to further their practical skills on live horses in small groups (2-4 vets per ultrasound ). Each attendee will rotate through the following practical sessions supervised by the specialists:
- Distal Limb Ultrasound - Attendees to choose area to examine
- Flexor Tendons & Suspensory Ligament or
- Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath & Fetlock or
- Pastern
- Objective Lameness Evaluation (Equinosis Q - Lameness Locator) as part of the Lameness Examination
- Upper Respiratory Endoscopy & Overground Case Discussions
- Ultrasound of the Stifle Region or Palpation & Radiographic Techniques - Neck, Back & Pelvis
- Objective Lameness Evaluation as part of the Pre-Purchase Exam
- Exercise Testing - ECG, Lactate Measurements etc.
The course fee includes, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, lunch and a certificate of attendance. To participate in the On-Location Case-Discussions & Practical Sessions, attendees are required to have first worked through the Lecture Series (included in the price). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

More InfoAndy qualified from the University of Liverpool, UK in 2004. He initially spent three months working for the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad, a charity caring for working equids, in Morocco. He then spent two years working for a mixed practice doing predominantly farm and equine work. In July 2006 he undertook an eighteen month internship at the Liphook Equine Hospital after which he spent a further six months working as a first opinion equine ambulatory vet for the same practice. In July 2008 he started a residency in equine surgery at the Royal Veterinary College and went on to join the surgical team at the College where he currently works. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in February 2012. Andy has published several articles in peer reviewed publications and presented at various national and international meetings. His research interests include digital flexor tendon sheath pathology, mesenchymal stem cell application in superficial digital flexor tendonitis and the role of back pain in poor performance.

She graduated from the University of Liège, Belgium in 2008 followed by an internship at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada. He graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 1983 and spent his first 3 postgraduate years in private equine practice in Maryland and Delaware . In 1989 he completed a 3-year equine surgery residency and Master of Science degree at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign , Illinois . While completing the Master of Science degree Dr. Keegan received training in statics and dynamics, experimental stress analysis, biomedical instrumentation and signal processing. After completing this surgery residency Dr. Keegan returned to private practice outside Detroit , Michigan , specializing in equine surgery and lameness. He returned to the University of Missouri in 1990 as a clinical instructor, was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1991 and to Associate Professor in 1998. Dr. Keegan is board certified in the American College of Veterinary Surgery. His primary research interest is using computer-assisted gait analysis to diagnose lameness in horses. He is a member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, The American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

More InfoEmmanuelle van Erck graduated in 1996 from the French Veterinary School of Maisons-Alfort. She trained in sports medicine at the University of Liège (Belgium) where she obtained her PhD on respiratory function testing in horses. She developped the equine sports medicine unit and consulted as senior clinician in the CIRALE in Normandy (France). In January 2010, she started her own ambulatory referral practice, the ‘Equine Sports Medicine Practice’, based in Belgium. Her practice offers specialized service in equine internal and sports medicine throughout Europe, following national teams and international riders.

More InfoMaarten Oosterlinck graduated from Ghent University in 2004 and has gained extensive clinical experience in equine orthopaedics and surgery at the faculty of veterinary medicine of Ghent University. Combining clinical work with research, Maarten earned his PhD on the use of pressure plate analysis for the objective evaluation of equine locomotion in 2011. In 2014, he passed the qualifying exam of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2014. In 2018, he also became a diplomate and board member of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. He currently serves as president of this college. Maarten has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters on a variety of equine orthopaedic and surgical topics, including visual and quantitative evaluation of lameness, hoof biomechanics, diagnostic analgesia, equine canker, etc. and he is a regular speaker and instructor at international courses and congresses. He is a scientific editor for Equine Veterinary Journal. He is actively involved in the supervision of residents and PhD-students, and has been a member of the examination committee of PhD-candidates in multiple countries. Maarten's daily clinical work is focused on equine orthopaedics and surgery, with a particular interest in podiatry and gait analysis.
