Sat 1 - Sun 2 September 2018 - A 2-day Practical Course.


This course has been designed to equip the equine practitioners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to make the most of their abilities and ultrasound machine, in the diagnosis and treatment of various equine musculoskeletal conditions affecting the mid and distal frontlimb and hindlimb, including the stifle joint. This course is suitable for all equine and mixed practice vets aiming to improve their knowledge and skills in this area, as the practical sessions will be adapted to the attendee’s skill level.

The course will run over two days, with a focus on highly illustrated lectures which will be systematically approached:

  • How to get the most out of your ultrasound machine
  • Ultrasonographic Anatomy and Conditions of the Foot & Pastern
  • Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath & Annular Ligament
  • Fetlock Joint Region
  • Flexor Tendons & Check Ligaments
  • Suspensory Ligament – Frontlimb vs. Hindlimb
  • Carpus & Carpal Sheath                
  • Tarsus, Tarsal Bursae & Sheath                 
  • Stifle Joint Region

The speakers will be sharing invaluable tips/tricks and pearls of wisdom with the attendees during the 7 hours of practical sessions in small groups (2 – 4 vets per ultrasound machine) on live horses.  Each attendee will be able to hone his/her practical skills at the following practical stations:  Machine set-up, foot & pastern, digital flexor tendon sheath, fetlock region, suspensory ligament, flexor tendons & check ligaments, tarsus & tarsal sheath and the stifle joint region.

The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, the wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a Certificate of Attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions).   Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available for the practical sessions.

    Dr. Wade Tenney completed his veterinary studies at Colorado State University. He then went on to do an equine private practice internship at Littleton Equine Medical Center where he stayed on for an additional two years as an associate veterinarian. He then joined B.W. Furlong and Associates in Oldwick, New Jersey where he practiced as an ambulatory/clinic veterinarian with a strong focus on reproduction and nuclear scintigraphy. In 2005, Dr. Tenney completed a 1 year fellowship in Large Animal Ultrasound with Dr. Mary Beth Whitcomb and Dr. Betsy Vaughan at the University of California, Davis. Following his fellowship, Dr. Tenney joined Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic on California’s beautiful central coast. During this time he worked as a general practitioner with a strong focus on sports medicine and ultrasound. He also provided care to clients at the HITS Thermal Horse Show during the winter months. In April of 2013, Dr. Tenney joined the Large Animal Ultrasound Department at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. At the Hospital for Large Animals, Dr. Tenney works closely with the Sports Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery services, providing diagnostic ultrasound services to horses throughout the Northeast. Dr. Tenney also spends the winter months at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida providing ultrasound consultations for performance horses in south Florida.

    Alex graduated from the University of Sydney in 2004. She completed a 1-year equine
    internship at Agnes Banks Equine Clinic, NSW Australia, before staying on as an ambulatory
    veterinarian. She subsequently undertook 6 years of imaging training at the University of
    California, Davis; 2 years training in Large Animal Ultrasound with some of the world's top
    Equine Ultrasonographers, followed by 4 years training to be a specialist veterinary
    radiologist. Alex became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology in
    2013 and returned to the University of Sydney as a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Diagnostic
    Imaging in 2014. She is currently working as a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Diagnostic
    Imaging at the University of Queensland as well as a private consultant for a number of
    Australian equine veterinarians.

    Frederik is a 1994 graduate of Gent University, Belgium and has worked in academia and equine private practice in The United Kingdom, Ireland, The United States, New Zealand, Belgium and Switzerland. After Internship and ACVS Equine Surgery residency specialist training, Fred moved to New Zealand . There he was a Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery at Massey University from July 2005 until December 2012. Frederik completed a second full time specialist training ending July 2016 as a Radiologist , Large Animal bias for the European College of Veterinary Medical Imaging (ECVDI) at Massey University, and then Ghent University, after which Frederik worked as a clinical Radiologist at Bern University, College of Veterinary Medicine. He passed the ECVDI examination in February 2017. Frederik has the Royal College Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia, is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgery (ACVS), a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI) Large Animal Emphasis and a registered veterinary specialist with the Australia and New Zealand Veterinary Council. Frederik has been an executive member of the New Zealand Equine Veterinary Association. He has lectured nationally and internationally and has teaching experience with undergraduate and post graduate veterinarians and has a wide clinical research experience. He currently consults in Small and Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging, Equine Orthopaedics and Surgery.
