CONTENT DESCRIPTION
This module will provide an in-depth and interactive exploration of the assessment and management of chronic orthopaedic pain in horses. Chronic orthopaedic pain is a relatively common occurrence in the equine population (though its prevalence is inherently hard to assess) and it represents a serious welfare concern.
In this interactive exchange, the impact of chronic orthopaedic pain on horses' health and wellbeing, the ways veterinarians can recognize, treat and monitor it using a systematic, holistic approach, will be explored. Importantly, this Module will also address how to involve and support the owner or caretaker as a key stakeholder in chronic pain assessment and management. Interactive case-based discussions will highlight that treating chronic painful musculoskeletal conditions effectively may not always be straightforward in horses, particularly against a background of 'normal' age-related decline and alterations in husbandry or management.
Janny de Grauw holds a minor in pharmaceutical sciences and qualified as a DVM from Utrecht University in 2007, after which she completed a PhD in equine synovial joint homeostasis in 2010, studying the interplay between pain, inflammation and cartilage tissue turnover. She worked as a post-doc researcher in various research consortia developing regenerative medicine solutions for the treatment of osteoarthritis in horses and humans, meanwhile embarking on a residency in anaesthesiology at the Department of Clinical Sciences at Utrecht University. She passed her board exams in 2016 to become a European board certified specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (Dipl. ECVAA). She subsequently worked as a clinical anaesthesiologist and assistant professor at Utrecht University, becoming head of service in 2020 and receiving the Faculty Lecturer prize in 2021. She then took up a position as a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia at the Royal Veterinary College in London, while maintaining a funded remote research position with the Utrecht University Department of Clinical Sciences. She became a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) and an RCVS recognized specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2022. She is also a member of the Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists (AVA) and extraordinary member of the Dutch Anaesthesia Society (NVA).
Clinically, Janny works as an anaesthesia and pain specialist with a passion for teaching and interdisciplinary team work. Janny maintains a long-held research interest in orthopaedics, especially in joint inflammation and joint pain as well as (pharmacological) management thereof in human and animal patients. In recent years, the recognition, neurobiology and management of chronic pain in animals (and humans) has become a focus of Janny's research. Janny is (co)author of over 50 peer reviewed publications, more than 100 scientific abstracts and several book chapters, and she has been awarded grants from several funding organizations (including ZonMW SYRCLE, Morris Animal Foundation, Centre for Unusual Collaborations). Janny currently works and lives in the Netherlands with her family and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College.

From 2008-2011 Casper completed the ECVS standard residency programme and became a diplomate of the ECVS in 2012. He has published research within the fields of equine pain management, equine pain evaluation, colic treatment and prognosis, minimally invasive surgery and upper respiratory disease diagnosis. Casper was been part of the surgery team at Evidensia Animal Hospital in Helsingborg, Sweden for 10 years during which time he became Head of Equine Surgery in September 2012.
