COURSE DESCRIPTION

Head trauma/conditions are frequently encountered by 1st opinion veterinarians and a significant number of these cases can be appropriately dealt with in the field and don’t require specialized equipment.  This 2-day practical course covers head wounds, facial & jaw fractures, sinus & guttural pouch problems, oral & tongue lacerations, nasofrontal suture periostitis, oral and nasal foreign bodies etc.  The panel of internationally renowned specialists will discuss in detail how to triage horses appropriately and which cases can be treated within your own practice setting.  Between both mornings the following highly-illustrated lectures will be given in English (without German moderation):

  • Facial Bones & Sinus Anatomy – A refresher
  • Paranasal Sinuses – The Work-Up
  • Paranasal Sinuses – Surgical Access
  • Working up Facial Wounds & Fractures (incl. X-ray & Ultrasound)
  • Fractures of the Mandible & Maxilla
  • Stabilizing Rostral Mandibular Fractures
  • Management of Facial Bone Fractures
  • Aftercare & Complications of Facial Fracture Repair
  • Hunting for the Foreign Body – Mouth & Nasal Passages
  • Oral & Tongue Lacerations
  • The use of External Fixators for Mandibular Fractures
  • Nasofrontal Suture Periostitis – An increasingly common Complication

Open and frank discussions are encouraged and the speakers will share their personal experiences, successes and failures, with attendees.

In the afternoons, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on cadaver specimens and to ask questions in true small groups (2-3 attendees per specimen), all under the supervision of specialists. The following practical sessions will be covered during the course:

After graduating from the University of Zürich in 1989, Christoph undertook postgraduate training at Zürich completing an Internship and then a Residency in Large Animal Surgery in the Division of Veterinary Surgery. Appointment to a Senior Lectureship in Large Animal Surgery in 1997 was followed in 2001 by the position of Assistant Professor of Equine surgery. From 2006 to 2009 Christoph held the position of Chair of Equine Surgery at the University of Glasgow Veterinary School, and was based in the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare. In October 2009 he was appointed as Director of the Equine Clinic of the Freie Universität of Berlin. Christoph has received education in equine acupuncture in both the USA and China, and is a certified member of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. In 1997 Christoph became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgery. From 2003 to 2007 he was a member of the exam committee, from 2007 to 2010 he was on the board of ECVS and this year he is president of the organization.

Christoph’s clinical interests are broad and include orthopaedic surgery and diagnostic imaging as well as abdominal surgery and diagnostic and surgical laparoscopy. A particular area of expertise is fracture repair and as a result he teaches (as a member of Faculty) equine fracture repair courses that are organized by AO-Vet. Current research activities include the evaluation of new technologies to improve fracture repair a arthrodesis, including new orthopaedic implants and 3-dimensional, intra-operative imaging.

Tim qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 2005. After a period in general practice, he joined Rossdales in early 2007, working as an orthopaedic assistant in the Diagnostic Centre. He then went on to complete an 18-month internship at the Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, before embarking on a surgical residency at the University of Edinburgh, co-supervised by Rossdales. Tim re-joined the practice in 2014, and prior to working full time in the hospital team he spent time worked in our Hertfordshire practice and then as part of our Newmarket horses in training team.

In 2013 Tim was awarded an MSc with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh for his work on post-operative finding in horses undergoing laryngoplasty (tie-back) for recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (laryngeal hemiplegia). In 2015 he attained the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (EVCS). He was awarded RCVS Specialist status in 2016 and joined the partnership at Rossdales in April 2017. Tim became a Diplomate of the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC) in 2018.

Tim works within the hospital surgical team where, as well as emergency admissions, he sees many elective surgical cases. Tim has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery, and sees many of the referred upper airway cases and oversees the practices overground endoscopy service. He has presented and published a number of award winning research studies in the fields of upper airway surgery and diagnostics, and is currently involved in a number of multi-centre research projects in this field.

During his surgical training Tim also developed his skills in equine dental surgery and sees many of the referral dental cases and sinus cases in the hospital. He is able to offer a complete specialist-level service in dental surgery, and regularly lectures and teaches on dental and sinus courses in the UK, Europe, Scandinavia and the USA.
