COURSE DESCRIPTION

Nowadays a great percentage of equine dental extractions are performed non-surgically but should never be taken lightly as complications like dental fractures, retained root tips, collateral damage etc. easily occur.  Over the past 20 years minimally-invasive surgical techniques have been developed and have led to a significant reduction of morbidity and mortality in horses.

This 2-day highly practical boutique course (max. 18 attendees) was devised for advanced practitioners with surgical experience and surgeons with a good working knowledge/experience in equine dentistry, specifically with dental extractions.  The panel of internationally renowned specialists will provide an overview on up-to-date, minimally-invasive surgical dental extraction techniques in horses, including minimally-invasive trephination & repulsion (MITR), minimally-invasive transbuccal extraction (MTE) and dental segmentation.  They will furthermore be sharing technical tips and tricks and pearls of wisdom that they have accumulated over the many years of performing equine dental surgery.

Between both days the 9 hours of practical sessions will provide an intimate environment for attendees to develop their surgical skills on equine specimens in true small groups (2-3 vets per specimen; attendee-to-instructor ratio of 4-6/1) at the following stations:

  • Surgical Anatomy of the Head – Sinuses Anatomy, Surgical Approaches, Facial Anatomy & Nerve Blocks
  • Minimally Invasive Trephination & Repulsion (MITR)
  • Minimally Invasive Transbuccal Extraction (MTE)
  • Paranasal Sinuses – Surgical Techniques
  • Dental Segmentation Techniques
  • Diagnostic Imaging Case-Discussions

The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions).  Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

This course is suitable for RCVS Modules:          B-EP.3; C-E.1; C-E.5; C-E.12; C-E.13;  C-E.14;  C-E.15;   C-EP.16; C-VDI.1; C –VDI.4

Elke Pollaris heads the equine dentistry department at the Morette Equine Care Clinic, Belgium.

Elke graduated as a veterinarian from Ghent University in 2014. After an internship, she specialized in equine dentistry at the same university. She passed her European specialist exam in 2019 and became one of the few certified equine dental specialists in Belgium (Diplomate EVDC Eq). In addition, she completed PhD in 2021 in which she investigated the effect of cracks in horse teeth.

From October 2021, Elke will provide specialized dental care for horses at the clinic and also at your home. She emphasizes a healthy mouth and the prevention of dental and gum problems, so that your horse stays healthy and can deliver top performance.

Richard graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London in 2004, following which he spent 6 months in mixed practice before undertaking an 18 month equine internship at Donnington Grove Veterinary Practice in Newbury. He then undertook a residency in equine surgery as well as a Master’s degree and then a PhD at Glasgow University.

Richard obtained his RCVS certificate in orthopaedic surgery in 2009, his ECVS diploma in Large animal surgery in 2010, a Master’s degree in Equine surgery in 2011, his PhD investigating risk factors for injury to Thoroughbred horses during racing in 2013 and his EVDC diploma in equine dentistry in 2018.

Richard enjoys all aspects of equine surgery and has research interests in both surgery and dentistry.

Sam Luis Hole joined the practice in June 2009 and became a partner in April 2017.  Sam holds the European Diploma in Equine Dentistry – the highest possible level of qualification in the subject. Sam is one of a very small number of equine vets who have also taken the joint BEVA / BAEDT equine dental technicians exam. Indeed uniquely Sam obtained his BAEDT qualification after studying in both the UK and the USA before he started at Vet school.

Sam is an RCVS recognised advanced practitioner in both equine dentistry and equine practice. Sam has lectured on equine dentistry and acted as an examiner for the BEVA/BAEDT examinations. He has been co author of a number of published papers in various journals on equine dentistry. He qualified as a vet in 2007 and has gained experience in a mixed practice in Fife Scotland. Outside of work Sam is an enthusiastic rugby player and competes at show jumping. Sam was also the first Vet to obtain the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice – Equine Dentistry. Sam loves teaching people about equine dentistry – so when His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales visited the clinic he took the opportunity to demonstrate how to perform a thorough dental examination.
