COURSE DESCRIPTION

Nowadays most equine practices have an endoscope at their disposal, which however might not get used as much as it could.  This two-day practical course was developed to provide practitioners with an update on equine endoscopy, respiratory conditions and especially with the practical skills to perform most routine diagnostic endoscopic procedures (incl. GI) currently used in equine practice. A panel of international experts who have dedicated a significant proportion of their careers to equine endoscopy and respiratory conditions are involved with this course and will be sharing invaluable tips and tricks.  The first day will focus on the upper/lower respiratory tract and sinoscopy and on the second day the gastrointestinal tract (incl. the mouth) will be featured.

The following highly illustrated lectures (in English, with German moderation) will be held in the mornings:

  • Diagnostic Nasal & Upper Respiratory Endoscopy, incl. Guttural Pouches
  • Sinus Approaches & Sinoscopy
  • Overground Respiratory Endoscopy
  • Lower Respiratory Tract (incl. tracheal wash & bronchoalveolar lavage)
  • Making Sense of Lower Airway Test Results & Therapeutics for Lower Airway Conditions
  • Oesophagus, Stomach & Duodenum
  • Interactive Gastroscopy – when do you need to treat?
  • Clinical Endoscopy Case-Discussions

In the afternoons, the 7 hours small group sessions (3 – 5 attendees/endoscope) will provide attendees with plenty of opportunities to further develop their hands-on skills on live horses and specimens under the supervision of the experts.  Each attendee will rotate through the following practical stations:

  • Overground Endoscopy (Demonstration)
  • Anatomy Review of the Upper Respiratory Tract, incl. Nasal Passages, Sinuses & Guttural Pouches
  • Upper Respiratory Tract incl. Guttural Pouches
  • Lower Respiratory Tract incl. Tracheal Wash & Bronchoalveolar Lavage
  • Oral Endoscopy & Sinoscopy
  • Gastroscopy I
  • Gastroscopy II

The course fee includes lunches at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions).  Early course registration via the VetPD website is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

Currently Hospital Director at the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in Australia, Denis Verwilghen started off his career as an equine veterinarian in private practice in Ireland and the Netherlands immediately after graduation from the University of Ghent, Belgium in 2003. With the desire to improve his skills, Denis went back to academia end 2004 to become resident in equine surgery at the University of Liege, Belgium. In 2006 he defended a master in veterinary science degree on the subject of "Osteochondrosis and its relationship with IGF-I in the Horse". In 2009 he obtained a specialist diploma (DES) in Large animal Surgery from the University of Liege and in 2010 Denis successfully passed the exam of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Denis then defended his PhD in Liege about clinical impact of developmental orthopaedic diseases in horses. In 2022 Denis became diplomate of the equine chapter of the European College of Veterinary Dentistry.

After spending some time in Sweden, Denis and his wife Gaby, an ECEIM diplomate, moved back to Belgium and started a consultancy based equine medicine and surgery service. In 2013, both have been appointed at the Equine hospital of the Copenhagen University before moving as an Associate Professor and Head of the Camden Equine Centre - Sydney University in 2018. Following a brief period in Germany in 2021, Denis returned to Australia to work for Melbourne University at their Goulburn Valley Equine practice.

Denis interests lay in general soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery. He has a special interest in surgical head disorders, dentistry and biosecurity in veterinary medicine with emphasis on surgical principles and hand hygiene. Denis has a broad range of publications on various aspects of equine surgery with a particular interest in asepsis research, orthopaedic biomarkers and dentistry.

Gaby’s interests and expertise lay in equine internal medicine and emergency and critical care. She has a special clinical interest in critically ill patients such as horses with acute colic or diarrhea, acute neuromuscular disorders and sick neonatal foals, and the use of thoracic and abdominal ultrasonography in those patients.

Gaby has publications on various aspects of equine internal medicine with a particular focus on neuromuscular disorders and monitoring tools of the sick horse. She is author or co-author of over 60publications in national and international peer reviewed journals and is invited speaker at national and international conferences. In addition, she is active in the veterinary specialisation colleges as member of the ECVECC re-accreditation committee.

Gaby started her career as an equine intern in private practice in the Netherlands immediately after graduation from the University of Ghent, Belgium in 2003. Following this internship she got a residency position in equine internal medicine at the University of Liege, Belgium and passed the exam of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine in 2009. She also obtained a master in veterinary science degree and a PhD on the subject of atypical myopathy.

In 2011, Gaby moved with her family to Sweden to work as a senior clinician at Uppsala University. In 2013, she took up a position as Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor in Equine Medicine at the Equine Hospital of the Copenhagen University. In 2017, she was awarded the title of Diplomate of the European College of Emergency and Critical care.

Since March 2018, Gaby joined the Camden Equine Centre veterinary team where she headed the equine internal medicine section. In January 2021 she returned to Europe to work in a German private equine hospital and develop a clinical educational centre in the Altano Group. Today, she remains affiliated to the University of Sydney as an Honorary Associate Professor and is currently working at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in Australia.

Leanne began at Randwick Equine Centre in 1989 after an internship under the guidance of Professor David Hutchins. Leanne worked at REC before pursuing specialist training in the USA in medicine. Obtaining her specialist qualifications in medicine, Leanne now functions as a valuable racetrack practitioner and consults on the hospital's internal medicine and medicine referral cases.
