PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

Horses affected by sinonasal disease for an extended time seldom respond to medical treatment. This can be due to inspissation of exudate, the presence of an infected cheek tooth, an intra-sinus benign growth (e.g. a sinus cyst or progressive ethmoid haematoma), a malignant tumour, or mycotic infection. Additionally, most sinus diseases are accompanied by infection of the nasal conchal bullae that can also cause continuing nasal discharge.

A panel of world-renowned surgeons with extensive experience with sinonasal surgery will be discussing and debating the best diagnostic and therapeutic approaches through the presentation of routine and less common cases.  Attendees are welcome to share their own cases, experiences and will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

Henry joined us at the beginning of 2017 from the Langford Vets at the University of Bristol where he has been a Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery for the last 14 years. He was also Head of Equine Clinical Services until 2015, where he was responsible for teaching soft tissue surgery and dentistry to veterinary undergraduates.

Henry is an RCVS Specialist in Equine Surgery and Dentistry and his particular interests are upper airway surgery, maxillofacial surgery and dentistry. He has published widely in these fields, and lectured and taught at conferences and courses around the world.

Born and educated in Gloucestershire, Henry’s other interests include playing tennis, cycling, skiing, kitesurfing and occasional field sports.

Dr. James Carmalt graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1998 and then completed an internship in large animal medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). After working in general mixed practice (Tasmania, Australia), he returned to the WCVM for two back-to-back residencies in equine practice and large animal surgery.

Next, Dr. Carmalt spent one year practising in Australia at an equine specialty practice that focused on Thoroughbred broodmare and foal surgery. He returned to Canada in 2007 and joined the WCVM's Department of Large Animal Sciences where he is a tenured full professor.

Dr. Carmalt travels extensively to work in private practices and academic institutions internationally. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research findings at more than two dozen international conferences.

His main areas of research are equine dentistry (specifically temporomandibular joint or TMJ disease) and evidence-based medicine. He holds a PhD (the topic of which was equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction or PPID), and is quadruple-boarded (equine practice, equine dentistry, equine sports medicine and rehabilitation, and large animal surgery).

Dr. Carmalt commonly peer-reviews professional publications including those for PLOS One, Veterinary Surgery and other high quality journals. Additionally, he is an editorial board member of the open access, EBVM journal Veterinary Evidence, which is published by RCVS Knowledge.

Jim graduated from Kansas State University in 1973. Then worked in private equine and food animal practices in Texas, California, and Kansas for 5 years after graduation. Most of this time in private practice was spent working in feedyards in Western Kansas.

Afterards hecompleted a master's degree and a residency in large animal surgery at Texas A&M University in 1980. He is a member of the faculty at Texas A&M University until 1997. Since then he has worked at the University of London, Auburn University, the University College Dublin, and the University of Tennessee, where we has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Science since 2003.

He is also a member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. His main research interests are equine respiratory and reproductive surgery and lameness.

A graduate of University College Dublin, later obtaining a PhD in equine respiratory disorders at The University of Edinburgh, Professor Dixon has spent most of his professional life at the Dick Vet, where he has specialised in equine respiratory and dental disorders.

He is an internationally recognised expert in both these fields and our department is recognised as one of the foremost international centres for clinical work and clinical research in equine dental and upper respiratory surgery.

He is currently an editor of the standard international textbooks on equine respiratory and dental diseases and has over 200 publications and 3000 citations on these areas. He also lectures and gives practical workshops extensively around the world in these areas.
