COURSE DESCRIPTION
BEVA survey constituted up to 10% of clinical cases seen in practice. In addition, the eye is regularly examined as part of insurance or pre-purchase examinations with the clinician commonly having to make decisions as to the significance of ophthalmic findings. Finally, examination of the eye is an important part of the complete physical and neurological examinations, with the ophthalmic findings often giving a clue as to the underlying disease or problem. The importance of ophthalmology to the clinician undertaking equine work is therefore undeniable and yet most veterinarians received only limited training in this area whilst in vet school or as a young assistant. This practically-oriented course is intended to help equine clinicians learn about the most important and common problems in the equine eye, to gain confidence in how to deal with these conditions and how to interpret their findings. Extra time will be available after lectures for discussion and attendees are encouraged to interact with the speakers in open and frank conversations.
In the mornings the following topics will be covered in highly illustrated lectures and case presentations :
- Equine ophthalmic examination: Basic examination & sample collection
- Diagnostic ultrasonography and infrared imaging
- 3Corneal ulcers and wound healing
- Ocular and adnexal neoplasia
- Diagnosis and treatment of equine uveitis: managing expectations
- Equine glaucoma & cataracts
In the afternoons, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and equine specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees), all under the supervision of specialists. Attendees will rotate through the following practical sessions:
- Ophthalmic Procedures – Nerve blocks, lavage system placement, aqueocentesis, intravitreal injections etc.
- Basic Surgical Techniques – Enucleation, eyelid laceration repair, temporary tarsoraphy, corneal laceration, conjunctival grafts etc.
- Ocular Ultrasound - live horses
- Examination of Horses with Eye Problems
- Pre-Purchase Examination Case Discussions
The combined talents and extensive experience of the team of internationally renowned equine ophthalmologists involved with this course, along with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, will stimulate attendees to assimilate knowledge, to put it into practice in small groups and to discuss these very important clinical problems in the horse and pony.
The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. On the evening of the first day all attendees are invited to attend the wine & cheese reception. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.
This course is suitable for RCVS Modules: B-EP.3; C-E.4; C-E.5; C-E.15; C-E.16
Dr. Stephanie C. Bell is a native of North Carolina. She received her Bachelor of Science from UNC at Chapel Hill in 2001 (Go TarHeels!). Dr. Bell graduated with Phi Zeta honors from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Following graduation, she spent three years in private primary care practice in North Carolina. She completed her rotating internship at the University of Tennessee from 2009-2010 and residency in Comparative Ophthalmology at the University of California-Davis from 2010-2013.
Equine ophthalmology is Dr. Bell’s passion. Her clinical interests include immune-mediated ocular disease, corneal disease, microsurgery (corneal and cataract surgery), blepharoplasty and other adnexal surgery, and ocular manifestations of systemic disease. Her primary research as a resident focused on novel therapeutics for Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU). Currently she is planning to study Eosinophilic keratoconjunctivitis.
As a veterinary ophthalmologist, Dr. Bell feels it is her duty to restore and/or maintain quality vision when possible and comfort always. Providing therapies for visual, pain-free, cosmetic eyes to her patients is essential. She loves bonding with her patients and their owners.
Dr. Bell is an avid music fan; her most influential musical inspiration is Waylon Jennings. She enjoys horseback riding, walking with her dogs, live music, songwriting, and spending time with family, friends, fiancé Brent, and their beloved animals. She has been known to perform duets with her Dad. Dr. Bell shares her heart with their Golden retriever mix June Carter, lab/pit/heeler/street dog mix Beaucephus Williams, long-haired dachshund Stoney Earle, new Golden retriever puppy Jolene May, and boss cat Levon Helm. She adores her handsome spunky off the track thoroughbred horse Lukas Colter Prine.
More InfoDr. Caryn Plummer, a native Floridian, graduated with a biology degree from Yale University in 1997. She is a 2002 honors graduate of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Following veterinary school, she completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine followed by a residency in comparative ophthalmology at the University of Florida. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (2006).
After completing specialty training, Dr. Plummer joined the faculty at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine as an assistant professor in 2006. She is currently a tenured professor at the UF. Her research interests include corneal wound healing, glaucoma and immune-mediated ocular disease. She has lectured extensively both in the USA and abroad on many topics associated with clinical veterinary ophthalmology and animal models of ophthalmic disease, especially glaucoma. She is is a contributing author to the Gelatt’s classic textbook Veterinary Ophthalmology (4rd, 5th and 6th editions) and an associate editor for the 6th edition. She is also a charter member of and currently serves as the secretary/treasurer for the International Equine Ophthalmology Consortium. She currently chairs the Vision for Animals Foundation Glaucoma Consortium.
