Treatment Options

Veronica Roberts' headshaking research is widely recognised as world leading. In this online lecture she reviews the anatomy and function of the trigeminal nerve, how these relate to trigeminal-mediated headshaking, the principles underlaying various methods of treatment and the challenges to objective assessment of any response to treatment. She then summarises the efficacy and limitations of the published treatment options and considers the potentials of future developments.

What, why, who & how to make a diagnosis

European Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine, Veronica Roberts considers how to approach the horse presented for the reason of headshaking in a complete and logical manner and reviews the means for achieving the most accurate diagnosis. She further discusses the limitations of the techniques currently available and how diagnostic protocols might be further developed in the future.

University Of Bristol, UK

Veronica qualified from the University of Cambridge in 2003 having previously graduated from the University of Oxford. She has experience of working in a number of referral and university hospitals in the UK and Europe. She is a European and RCVS Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons due to meritorious contributions to clinical practice. She holds a PhD in trigeminal-mediated headshaking. She is a Senior Lecturer at Bristol Veterinary School and sees only headshaking cases clinically, at B and W Equine Hospital. Her clinical research into headshaking is world-leading. Veronica’s passion for horses goes beyond her veterinary work. She has also competed at Advanced Medium in dressage and trained her own horses.
