CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Different paths can lead to a career as an equine behaviour consultant. Both education and practical experience are essential, which may include an academic degree, professional certification, and internships. Many behaviour consultants gain practical experience by working with clinical animal behaviourists, trainers, and veterinary professionals. In addition, equine behaviour consultants may be employed by universities, affiliated with veterinary practices, or manage their own businesses. Equine behaviour consultants are expected to hold appropriate certifications and licenses as regulated by the country, state, or local area in which they provide services.

Equine behaviour concerns are often complex and ideally best managed a team of professionals, including a veterinarian, behaviour consultant, and owner or trainer, who work together for the horse’s best outcome. As a key team member, one role of the behaviour consultant is to ensure that the intervention supports the behaviour change goals. While most behaviour consultant services involve in-person care, virtual care has expanded the ability to reach clients living in remote communities. In general, and especially with virtual care, there is a need to rigorously assess the effectiveness of and compliance to behaviour change interventions in horses.

Animals have always been the defining feature of Robin's life and work. As a professor of animal learning and behavior, she teaches courses in equine behavior and welfare at Virginia Tech and at the University of Guelph. Her research is on equine learning and behavior, and she serves as a graduate student research advisor. Her work also involves consulting on behavior cases, with pertinent certifications as an Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) through the Animal Behavior Society, an Equine Behavior Consultant (CEBC) through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, and as a Fear Free Professional.
