COURSE DESCRIPTION

Equine practitioners working with sports horses are under considerable pressure to keep the horses under their care competing at the highest level at all times. Furthermore, evaluating poorly performing competition horses can be a daunting task because the clinical signs caused by different conditions may be very similar, leaving vets wondering where to start their investigation.

The world-renowned speakers will provide a broad overview on the most important topics in sports horse medicine and orthopedics and will cover the following subjects through highly-illustrated and interactive presentations and by sharing many practical tips and tricks with the attendees:

  • Latest Developments in Orthopedic Therapies - Polyacrylamides, Pro-stride, Resveratrol, Stem Cell Therapy, PrP, IRAP etc.
  • A Novel Perspective on Overground Endoscopy
  • Applications for Objective Lameness Evaluation Analysis in Sports Horses
  • New Ways of using Hematology & Biochemistry in Sports Horses
  • Lameness Examination - When things get complicated; Reliability / Repeatability of Blocks, Multiple Site / Limb Lameness
  • Which Heart Murmurs are relevant in Sports Horses
  • Practical Equine Rehabilitation - A review of Available Modalities
  • Exercise Testing - Identifying Subclinical Problems in Sports Horses
  • Contentious Issues in Sports Horse Pre-Purchase Examination
  • Feeding the Competitive Athlete

In the afternoons , 7 hours of practical sessions  will allow attendees to further their practical skills on live horses in small groups (2-4 vets per ultrasound ). Each attendee will rotate through the following practical sessions supervised by the specialists:

  • Distal Limb Ultrasound - Attendees to choose area to examine
    • Flexor Tendons & Suspensory Ligament or
    • Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath & Fetlock  or
    • Pastern
  • Objective Lameness Evaluation (Equinosis Q - Lameness Locator) as part of the Lameness Examination
  • Upper Respiratory Endoscopy & Overground Case Discussions
  • Ultrasound of the Stifle Region or Palpation & Radiographic Techniques - Neck, Back & Pelvis
  • Objective Lameness Evaluation as part of the Pre-Purchase Exam

The course fee includes lunches, coffee / tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Andy qualified from the University of Liverpool, UK in 2004. He initially spent three months working for the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad, a charity caring for working equids, in Morocco. He then spent two years working for a mixed practice doing predominantly farm and equine work. In July 2006 he undertook an eighteen month internship at the Liphook Equine Hospital after which he spent a further six months working as a first opinion equine ambulatory vet for the same practice. In July 2008 he started a residency in equine surgery at the Royal Veterinary College and went on to join the surgical team at the College where he currently works. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in February 2012. Andy has published several articles in peer reviewed publications and presented at various national and international meetings. His research interests include digital flexor tendon sheath pathology, mesenchymal stem cell application in superficial digital flexor tendonitis and the role of back pain in poor performance.

Fe is a specialist in internal medicine, with a focus on equine cardiology and ultrasound. She graduated from the University of Liège, Belgium in 2008 followed by an internship at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada. During her internal medicine residency at the University of Guelph, Canada, Fe combined her clinical training with a graduate degree. Her research focused on Inflammatory Airway Disease in actively racing horses and in 2012 she defended her thesis to receive a DVSc degree from the University of Guelph. After becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2013, she pursued her interest in equine sports medicine further: she completed a 2 year Equine Ultrasound and Cardiology Fellowship at New Bolton Center, USA. Fe currently works in Belgium, for Equine Sports Medicine Practice, helping high-level sport horses in different equestrian disciplines reach their peak performance and providing specialty equine cardiology, respiratory and ultrasound services across Europe.
